1/1/16 - Happy New Year
1/2/16 - The Day's Events (Jimmy
gets a present. Plenty of sticks and grass brought in, and even a squirrel,
which Mom didn’t seem real interested in. Mom teases us. Dad almost knocks
Mom’s head off with a branch. Lots of nestorizing.)
1/3/16 - The Day's Events (Photographs by Max Hester. Coot,
lots of in and out’s by Dad, huge stick, Mom spends a lot of time on nest. Dad
gnaws on a limb and almost loses it. Both came in around 6:10 p.m. and we
thought they would spend the night, but they didn’t.)
1/4/16 - Highlights (Photographs
by Max Hester. Windy today, nest rocks and rolls. Fish to eat, lots of sitting
around and EGGcitement. A kiss good-night, and off they go.)
1/5/16 - Highlights (Mom
teases us by laying in the bole momentarily; Dad gnaws on a branch, works on
the bole; Dad lays in the bole; both Mom and Dad spend a lot of time just
sitting in the nest.)
1/7/16 - First Egg Laid Condensed (Congratulations
Berry College and Mom and Dad! First egg laid 5:28 p.m., and we’re all so
proud!)
1/8/16 - The Day's Events (Dad
sees Egg #1 for the first time and incubates without hesitation; he vocalizes
his pride and joy when Mom comes back for the switch. Intruder below the nest,
which Dad takes care of in no uncertain terms. Dad stumbles over Mom. All in
all, a great day.)
1/9/16 - Just Some Clips (Shift
changes and lots of incubating.)
1/10/16 - Second Egg Laid (From
labor, to delivery, to first egg roll, and everything in between - we have a
second egg! Bonus overhead cam view with first glimpse of egg.)
1/11/16 - Just Some Clips (Dad
sees the second egg for the first time; he nibbles on a pine bough while
incubating. Dad brings in a big wad of grass and unburies the fish bone for
Mom.)
1/12/16 - Just Some Clips (Dad
brings Mom a coot for breakfast; Dad does some nice shimmy shimmies.)
1/13/16 - Just Some Clips (Still
captures, shift changes, egg rolling and shimmies. Dad brings in a stick and
Mom and Dad have a conversation.)
1/14/16 - Just Some Clips (Photographs
by Gena Flanigen Photography. Dad arrives at 7:42 a.m.; he’s caught napping
while on duty an hour later; and there is a fly-by at 9:54.)
1/15/16 - Just Some Clips (Photographs
by Gena Flanigen Photography. Rainy day in Georgia. Mom barely budged while
protecting her eggs during the rain. Dad brings Mom a tiny morsel of coot. Mom
declines the mid-afternoon switch.)
1/16/16 - Just Some Clips (Photograph
by Gena Flanigen Photography. No food brought in, just grass. Dad makes an
unexpected return to the nest around 6:09 p.m., as if to tell Mom good-night. Note: Fellow
chatters on the ground today celebrating Nutty’s birthday)
1/17/16 - Just Some Clips (Photographs
by Max Hester. Dad is late coming in this morning and Mom was squalling for
him. Dad brings a “log” in this evening.)
1/18/16 - The Owl & The Eagle (Photographs
by Gena Flanigen Photography. Mom is startled by an owl flying over her head
before dawn. Dad pecks at the grass while on duty, and at one point, he rests
on a back branch before taking off. Twinkle Toes Dad even backs over Mom quite
unintentionally. Dad moves the “log” and Mom brings in grass.)
1/19/16 - Sunshine on My Shoulders (The
sun shone bright on the nest today; little did Mom and Dad know what was in
store for them in the coming days. Mom was squeeing in the early afternoon, and
the ground crew reported another eagle in the area. Not to fear, Dad was
perched high up on the left Y Branch ready and waiting.)
1/20/16 - Dad Won't Budge (Dad
brings in an unidentifiable food object (UFO), which Mom promptly devours.
Then, when Mom is ready for the shift change, Dad refuses to get up. She
cajoles, pecks, and hollers… all to no avail.)
1/22/16 - 19 Hours and Counting (Dreadful
weather through the night and all day. Poor Mom spent 19 hours protecting her
eggs from the cold, wind, rain, and occasional sleet. When Dad finally showed
up, thankfully, he brought a nice fish for her. He even brought in a UFO early
in the afternoon.)
1/23/16 - Blowing in the Wind (Windy
and cold in the nest. Dad brings Mom a duck, she eats, leaves, and Dad takes a nap.)
1/28/16 - Patience is a Virtue (Dad
shows up around 8:30 a.m. without food; undoubtedly, Mom wasn’t happy. Dad
takes a break at 2:23 p.m. Mom comes home at 3:18 p.m., and Dad bolts out the
front door. Mom adorns herself with grass. Mom is startled by Rocky in the
early evening.)
1/29/16 - The Big Gulp (Dad
arrives really late this morning. He finally rolled in at 11:14 a.m. with a
morsel of fish for Mom. Only took her a gulp or two to finish it off. Mom kept
Dad waiting all afternoon for her return; 7 hours’ worth of waiting. Rocky gets
another wing flap from Mom.)
1/30/16 - Hang On, Mom (Quite
windy today; at one point it looked like Mom was going to get blown away. Mom
gets her talons stuck in grass. Dad brings Mom a fish dinner.)
1/31/16 - Dad Sports a Mustache (Mom
takes a quick break. Dad brings in grass instead of food this morning. Dad
shows off his feather mustache. Fish for dinner, and Rocky plays peek-a-boo.)
