Video: Big Time Toe Tussle

Lucky Bel is at the nest today, so in her absence, some of us have tried to compile the log. Here's what we have:

B6 in left branch 6:31am, to nest, to left branch/out 6:48am. Per lacamper, a bluebird was seen on the nest and also a GCF on nest.

Back to Bel: I'll be headed toward Berry in 15 - 20 mins. No birdies home, hope one shows up! I take that back, there is one eaglet here.

Per Sasha - B6 returns home left Y branch 7:30; seeing that no breakfish has been served, B6 looks through every door and window for her family, she heads out the back door 7:32.

Per BEL - B6 Flew out past the Krannert Center around 8:10 and was flying low, so she may be perched in some trees somewhere back there. Flew out past the Krannert Center again around 10:08, I'm assuming that was B6, since Alex said they hadn't seen B7 since yesterday morning.

Per Jerri - 11:12am, B6 left the left branch headed low straight for the parking lot!

Per Bel - Then B7 is tucked in behind a couple of pine boughs on their favorite tree. Mom flew straight toward the river when she left the mast. She didn't stop to perch for us.

Per Sasha - Mom in left Y branch with fish 10:37; overworked and overheated, Mom starts to make room for incoming squeeing B7 in left side 10:38; B7 begging Mom to stay and give him seconds 10:58; after she counts her talons and takes about all the abuse to her left foot she can handle, Mom runs OUT right Y branch at 11:00. B7 calls out, hoping it was a sorry to Mom 11:12; left Y branch 11:12, PS to lighten his load {wink}, and then out.

Per Bel - B6 came in and soared around for a bit then landed in a tree behind the nest tree. Then he flew over and took B7's perch. B7 flew beside or behind Krannert. After perching for about 15 minutes, B6 left toward the river. B6 came in about 10 minutes ago soared for long time landed on their favorite perch. A RTH came down and hit him and then left. All is good, B6 is still sitting on his perch squalking.

Per Sasha - Mom in left Y branch with a big fish 4:52; can hear ground crew 4:53; Mom starts to eat head and cracks it open and B6 squee's all the way home to the left Y branch 4:54; as Mom zones out the noise protruding from B6’s beak and looks at parking lot after hearing a loud laugh from viewing area 4:54 thinking to herself, what's so funny? You want to come up here and deal with sassiness, overbearing attitude and get bit on your chest? As Mom watches those big nosed peeps below, she is deciding a good plan of action for payback for such laughter at her expense. B6 beakdives into HER fish and talking with a beakful the whole time. After listing to B6's trumpet, clarinet, high pitched tone, like nails on a chalkboard for over an hour, Mom decides to keep her hearing and sanity and jumps to the left Y branch 6:22: B6 follows behind shortly after to the left Y branch 6:25; Dad in back door 9:06; Dad to left branch and out 9:11; at 9:10, B6 lands behind nest in another tree.

Both B’s in at 10:13 a.m.; B7 returned in the afternoon for a little rest on the nest. Both B’s back at 2:47 p.m., looked like they were wondering when the food would be delivered. One B left, and the other lies down. Mom quickly delivered at fish at 4:32 and the kids came in right behind. B7 gets the fish, B6 gets Mom’s foot. Rocky was seen at 11:53 p.m.

Squeeing could be heard from our teens heading towards the incoming food. Let the games begin. Mom in front door with squirrel 6:40 a.m.; B7 smoothly glides into nest left side branch 6:41 and mantles his meal (not for long). B6 in front door 6:41 and goes in for the under belly steal. Tug-O-Squirrel begins 6:41; B7 gets his daily leg stretch in with the help of B6. As Mom gets shoved out of the way, she then decides to make a run for it, out the left side branch 6:41. Tug-O-Squirrel continues and more leg stretches for B7 6:42; B7 holds his talons firm into squirrel, like a knife stuck in wood. The Tug-O-Squirrel gets more intense with each teen pulling back to front across the nest. The war continues, B6 decides to switch tactics, from using her beak to her talons, she digs deep into the squirrel. B7 still has right talons dug deep and not letting go at the moment. B6 decides she will just start eating. B7 releases his bionic talon grip and gives it to B6 once again ‘cause he has faith more food will come, and he was right. Dad? in left branch with fish 6:48; B6 snatches fish from Dad’s talons and B7 goes for the squirrel. Dad out left branch 6:48; B6 eats fish and B7 gets the squirrel; B6 out left branch 7:23; B7 out left branch 7:40.

Dad in front door with squirrel 8:05, B7 in under left branch 8:05, B6 in front door, almost takes out Dad and steals the squirrel 8:05; Dad out LS 8:05; B6 moves squirrel to right side of nest 8:05; B6 still eating at 8:30; B6 moves 8:33 and B7 moves in for the pelt; B6 eating 'sketti, tail or sinew 8:33; B6 to left branch/out 8:36; B7 out or to back left branch 8:44; B7 on lower left branch 9:36, to nest 9:37; B7 out left branch 9:40; Mom in with mangled mammal-squirrel? 10:28; B7 in front door with B6 right behind, Mom almost pushed off nest 10:29; both B's eating, but Mom wants to feed them 10:33; B6 has a hissy fit 10:37; tug-of-war 10:43; Mom alerts - possible intruder 10:50; B7 to back branch or out 10:51; Mom still alerting 10:52; both B7 and Mom vocal 10:53, alert seems to be over by 10:56, Mom picks at food as B6 has another hissy fit 10:58; Mom out back door 11:10; B7 in to lower left branch 11:16, B7 to nest 11:18; B6 leaps to Y-crook 11:26, B6 moves to left branch and out 11:27. B7 gets up f/nap 3:05pm, to left branch 3:06, to nest to grab nestovers and back to left branch and back to nest 3:09pm; B7 leaves via back side of nest 3:42; B in to lower left branch 3:42, other B in to lower left branch 3:43, B6 to nest 3:44, B7 to nest 3:48; B6 to left branch/out 4:00; B7 to left branch/out 4:01; Mom in front door with fish 5:27, B6 in over RB, B7 to lower left branch and Mom to left branch 5:27, Mom out 5:29. B7 flies by nest tree/shadow on Cam 1 at 5:17pm; B7 in to lower limb 5:19, B7 to nest 5:19. Aklsarratt was at the nest and commented in chat, "Jimmy..after you left a hawk flew in and almost knocked one of the babies out of the tree. Dad flew in mad as hades. The babies are so sweet...they stay together even when they're not in the nest. And a parent is always close by. Dad flew in immediately after the hawk did. He stayed a while to make sure they were okay then flew off. They are usually close by even if we can't see them." Per Jani – fly by at 7:35; B7 out 7:44; B tries to land on nest 7:47, misses and goes out of cam view; B leaves far left branch; B6 to nest 7:58. Another fly by at 8:06. Bel's Must See Live Video: Fledge! Fledge!

B6 fledges around 11:04 a.m. Dad brings in a fish at 3:19 p.m., and B7 gets it all since B6 was still out on his/her adventure. Dad moves around quite a bit in the nest and a couple of the branches seemingly looking for B6. He leaves after about 10 minutes. B6 returns to the nest at 4:25 p.m.; he first went to a low branch then up into the nest. Dad comes back at 5:09 p.m. with some kind of rodent, perhaps a squirrel. B6 gets the rodent. Dad leaves a couple of minutes later. It was heartwarming to have both of the B's in the nest together again.

Bel's Must See Live Video: Eager Eaglet

Cam reset in the wee hours of the morning 1:24am. A lot of family vocalization starts at 2:18 a.m. with clucks, squees, and chatter. B7 highly upset and clucking, apparently not knowing what is going on, and neither do we. We can only speculate that an owl was around, or perhaps Mom made an unexpected visit to the tree throwing the kids off guard. Fortunately, after about 15 minutes, things calmed down.

Nap Time
You could see Mom and the kids on different branches as dawn approached. One of the kids, possibly B6, was having a time going from branch to branch, including the bouncy branch. Mom flew off the nest tree.

Dad in back door with fish 7:13, out quickly. B6? mantles, eats and is finished by 7:29. Dad brings in another fish at 7:46, he leaves a minute later. A little nut thrasher is seen on the nest at 7:47. At 8:38 a.m., B7 lifts up off the nest with the fish in his talons, then decides to eat it at 8:40. At 9:02, the nut thrasher starts to come down the back branch towards B6. The nut thrasher comes onto the nest at 9:29am to steal a feather while B6 was watching.

B7 right up to cam 12:04; B7 puts on a show on left branch 12:07.

Wingercising
B7 wingercising and playing around on upper left Y branch and comes close to an accidental fludge at 1:27. A bird flies past the nest.

Dad in back door 2:20 with ufo, B7 gets it. Dad to RB 2:20, out 2:21. B6 goes in for the steal 2:40.

B6 "hugs" B7 during nap time 5:18pm.

Bel was at the nest today and reported that: "M came in without going to the nest & stayed on her favorite perch for 2 or 3 hours, at 8:25 she went to a tree or two behind the nest to perch, at 8:30 dad came in without going to the nest & landed on Mom's fav perch. They were both still there when I left (almost dark)."
